The History of Wireless Power Transfer
Robert Moffat, KG4UHM
(NO Zoom Access)
February 21, 2025 @ 6:00PM-10:00PM

Wireless power has a long history, dating back to Nikola Tesla's research in the late 1800's and his grand, but unrealized vision of global wireless power.

After Tesla, the 20th century saw repeated attempts to make wireless power practical. However, Tesla's dream remained elusive, as most electronic devices continued to be powered by either wires or batteries.

Today, new advances in technology and the proliferation of novel use cases together promise to overcome the hurdles of the past and bring us closer to a world with ubiquitous wireless power.

In this talk, we explore the physics of wireless power, the engineering challenges involved, and the new possibilities enabled by recent innovations in wireless power technology.

Speaker Bio

Robert Moffatt received his Physics PhD at Stanford University doing research on the direct detection of Dark Matter When he was an undergraduate at MIT, he was one of the inventors of a resonant magnetic wireless power technology that later became an industry standard for wireless charging.

Today he is the co-founder and Chief Science Officer of Etherdyne Technologies, Inc., a startup company in Santa Clara, California which specializes in resonant magnetic wireless power technology.

He has published multiple IEEE papers in the field of wireless power and is a co-inventor of 28 patents worldwide.

He is also an active Amateur Radio operator with call sign KG4UHM.
